Peace Operations are a tool for the international community (subregional, regional, global, or even bilateral) to intervene in conflicts to build, maintain, enforce, or positively change the status quo of a conflict in the direction of peace, preferably sustainable peace. In any of these scenarios, the underlying objective is, above all, to save lives. This is made possible by providing physical protection, promoting human rights and dialogue, and restoring security, state authority, and its institutions, among other issues.
However, Peace Operations have also been criticized since their inception for having very little impact and, in some cases, creating other security and social problems that have had an adverse impact on the objective purpose of achieving peace. Several reforms have been made to improve peace operations at regional and global levels. Nonetheless, they seem not to have been sufficient to follow the changes in the international security system, not the dynamics of local conflicts, which evolve at speeds that the institutions that carry out Peace Operations seem not to be able to match.
UPEACE is aware of this phenomenon and has created a PhD Programme focused on specific objectives that have direct and indirect impacts on Peace Operations, providing higher education with a new platform for professionals to increase their knowledge while at the same time raising their skills and experience in Peace issues. The UPEACE’s Programme also focuses on increasing knowledge of the interaction between achieving peace and promoting initiatives by countries to commit to and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as they emerge from conflicts.
Furthermore, by galvanizing resources and working with universities, International Governmental and non-governmental organizations, Peaceeeping Training Centres, and other concerned institutions worldwide, UPEACE allows PhD candidates to present theses, strategies, methodologies, and innovative practical proposals to apply in the field and build collective knowledge of the lessons learned and best practices available to humanity.
